ACZ Cars
Originally AZ cars, ACZ Carriages came into service after refurbishing in the mid 1980's. Presently, they are part of Z Sets - the First class carriage, and the carriage within Z type sets containing the conductors van.

Seating 52 First Class passengers, seats can recline, and rotate (for facing-forward travel in both directions). At the back of the seats, they have meal trays (which include a cup holder), and a storage pouch. Below the seats, is a retractable stretched-U-shape footrest. Carpets are blue, as are the curtains, which are in a blue tint.

Each ACZ type carriage contains above seat luggage racks. There is also luggage space, a drinking fountain, and two rubbish bins, at the West End of the carriage.
A toilet is located in the West End vestibule area.

Access to ACZ carriages from platforms is by manual opening doors at the West End of the carriage. Entry from the East End- which is where the conductors van is, is strictly limited to V/Line staff & people with bikes or other similar accompanied items. ACZ252 & ACZ257, which were previously with West Coast Railway also have wheelchair accessible West End doors.

The conductors van area of the ACZ carriage includes a seat and desk for the conductor, a P.A. Announcement system, several luggage & parcel racks, brake gauges, an Emergency Brake switch, lighting switches, and cupboards for general supplies. They also contain wheelchair ramps, and a ladder- for emergencies. This van is significantly smaller in size to the ACN carriage vans.

Air Conditioning and heating is fitted in all ACZ carriages. Automatic push-button doors allows entry into the main seating area in ACZ252 & ACZ257. Manual opening doors are at the rear of each carriage, enabling travel between other carriages.

V/Line's rationalisation of Z Sets in the mid-nineties made several ACZ carriages redundant for First Class needs- these became reclassed as the BCZ.

BCZ Cars
BCZ Cars are virtually the same as ACZ cars, however, have a different coding (BCZ) and are designated as Economy class carriages.

A number of ACZ carriages were re-coded to BCZ carriages in the mid 1990's as demand for First class seating was diminishing, and additional capacity on trains was required. These carriages have since been converted to BTN and BZN type carriages.

The most recent ACZ to BCZ car conversions occurred in July 2006 with ACZ259 & ACZ262 being recoded to BCZ259 & BCZ262 respectively during their scheduled overhauls.

Manual doors are fitted for access to the saloons of BCZ259 & BCZ262.

Further information on BCZ cars will be within the History section in the future.
