Short BCH Carriages
Short BCH Carriages are part of nearly all
H Sets - the furthest east end carriage, and the carriage containing the conductors van.

They were converted from the mid to late 1980's from ex Harris Suburban train Motor (M) cars in order to provide an upgraded service to inter-urban passengers.

Seating 54 Economy passengers, seats are fixed in a 3x2 set up facing each other, except for the seats directly opposite the toilet at the west end, which are single seats in a flipped L shape layout.

Along with a toilet, there is luggage space, a drinking fountain, and a rubbish bin, at the West End of the carriage. Carpets are dark red, and the curtains are of a brownish colour.

BCH carriages do not contain above seat luggage racks, however, luggage can be stowed at the West End of the carriage, under seats and in the Conductors Van at the East end of the carriage.

Access to BCH carriages from platforms is by manual opening, self closing (controlled by the conductor) double sliding side doors at the West End of the carriage. These doors are wide enough to fit wheelchairs through.

Access to BCH carriages is also available for Authorised staff and passengers at the East End of the carriage through the external conductors van doors, which retain a similar appearance to the original Harris suburban car cab doors.

The conductors van area of the BCH carriage includes a seat and desk for the conductor, a P.A. Announcement system, several luggage & parcel racks, brake gauges, an Emergency Break switch, lighting switches, and cupboards for general supplies. They also contain wheelchair ramps, and a ladder- for emergencies.

Air Conditioning and heating is fitted in all BCH carriages, along with a map of the Victorian Rail Network. Manually opening doors allow travel between other carriages.

BCH carriages rely on HEP (Head End Power) from a locomotive or power van for power.

Long BCH Carriages
There are two long BCH Carriages, BCH132 & BCH133. These two carriages were converted from 75ft Harris suburban train T cars in 1985 & 1986, which were built 15ft longer than the other Harris suburban stock for trials on planned new suburban trains at the time (Hitachi's).

Apart from the longer length, and larger seating capacity (64 seats), these carriages have barely any differences to the short BCH's. However, they do contain a larger conductors van and different conductors van side doors.

These two carriages run in two sets of long H carriages, VLH32 & FLH33 respectively.

Short Van BCH Carriages
The last two BCH carriages built, BCH134 & BCH135, built in 1990 from 'Grey Ghost' Harris suburban trains have a shorter conductors van area. The conductors seat and desk is located where the retractable luggage racks are positioned in the normal Short BCH carriages.
Because of the shorter van, an additional 10 seats are fitted inside the seating saloon area.

These two carriages run in two sets - BCH134 in SH34 and BCH135 in VSH29.
