BRN Carriages are part of all N Sets. They contain the buffet module at the east end of the carriage, used for Inter City services to Albury, Swan Hill, Shepparton, Bairnsdale, Sale & Warrnambool.

Seating 66 Economy passengers, seats are in a 3x2 set up facing each other. As its Economy seating, they do not rotate or recline.  Carpets are dark red and the curtains are in a brownish tint.

Each BRN type carriage contains above seat luggage racks. There is also luggage space, a drinking fountain, and two rubbish bins, at the West End of the carriage.
A toilet is located in the West End vestibule area.

Access to BRN carriages from platforms is by manual opening doors at the both ends of the carriage. All doors are the same width, so BRN carriages can't facilitate for wheelchair passengers boarding (unless they have a narrow wheelchair). Despite this, their is space for wheelchairs available opposite the buffet module.

Note regarding access to BRN Carriages:
BRN56, part of set 'FN19', has been fitted with power closing and locking doors, controlled in a similar fashion to that of the H car sliding doors, at both the East and West End passenger entry doors. These doors are presently under trial.

Click Here for more information on the power closing and locking doors fitted to FN19 - which will eventually be fitted to all 'N' sets if the trial is successful.

The buffet module of the BRN carriage includes a seat and two counters, two refrigerators, two microwaves, stands for snack foods, a sink and a cash register. Its only used on selected inter-city services (mentioned at top of the page) and sells a selection of hot foods, rolls, soft drinks, juice, bottled water, beer, wines and snack foods. For a current buffet menu available on V/Line Inter City services, please click here.

Air Conditioning and heating is fitted in all BRN carriages. Automatic push-button door allow entry into the main seating area, and for travel in between other carriages.

All BRN carriages, excluding BRN52, run off Dual Power systems- meaning that power is generally supplied to them by the means of Head End Power (HEP) from a locomotive or powervan, however, if the Program Logic Controller (a component of the Dual Power Supply system) doesn't detect HEP from a locomotive, or if there's a technical problem with the HEP being supplied, the individual diesel alternators under the carriages automatically start up and provide power to the car.
