BS Carriages are the oldest members of VLP's carriage fleet.

Originally being built in 1937 for use on the Spirit Of Progress, V/Line's fleet of BS cars (BS215-BS219) were built in the late 1940's-early 1950's.

Being re-coded and re-numbered numerous times up until 1984, members of the BS fleet (not necessarily the ones VLP have) have also been coded as AS, VAC, VFR, VFS, VFX & SS cars - the middle four codes having a V, meaning they were on the Standard Gauge running Melbourne-Sydney services.

Seating 64 Economy passengers, seats are in a compartment set up, with 8 seats per compartment, and four seats against either wall.

Each BS type carriage contains above seat luggage racks. Toilets are located at each end, however, they are permanently locked up, due to the fact that they are not retention toilets. Stickers on the doors of these toilets alert passengers to this fact.

Access to BS carriages from platforms is by manual opening doors at the both ends of the carriage. All doors are the same width, so BS carriages can't facilitate for wheelchair passengers boarding.

Air Conditioning and heating is fitted in all BS carriages, along with a map of the Victorian Rail Network. Travel between carriages is by manually opening doors.

BS carriages can only be powered from Head End Power (HEP) from a N Class locomotive or a powervan.

Of the five BS's V/Line own, none of them are in service, with the last, BS217, running its last service on Sunday 23rd July 2006. Click here for more information on its last service.

All V/Line BS cars, BS215, BS216, BS217, BS218 & BS219 are presently stored at Newport Workshops, their futures unknown.
