BTH Carriages are part of all except one H Set (VSH29) - the furthest west end carriage, and the carriage, fitted with an automatic coupler and HEP cables.

Most were converted from the mid to late 1980's from ex Harris Suburban train Motor (M) cars in order to provide an upgraded service to inter-urban passengers.

Seating 63 Economy passengers, seats are fixed in a 3x2 set up facing each other, except for the seats at the far West End and those directly opposite the toilet at the east end, which are single seats in a flipped L shape layout.

Along with a toilet, there is luggage space, a drinking fountain, and a rubbish bin, at the East End of the carriage. Carpets are dark red, and the curtains are of a brownish colour.

BTH carriages do not contain above seat luggage racks, however, luggage can be stowed at the East End of the carriage.

Access to BTH carriages from platforms is by manual opening, self closing (controlled by the conductor) double sliding side doors at both the East and West Ends of the carriage. These doors are wide enough to fit wheelchairs through.

Air Conditioning and heating is fitted in all BTH carriages, along with a map of the Victorian Rail Network. Manually opening doors allow travel between other carriages.

NOTES:

  • Two carriages, BTH172 & BTH173 are longer by 15ft (about 4.5m), and contain 87 seats. That, along with the different window layout, is the only notable difference between the short and the long BTH Cars.

  • Two other carriages, BTH174 & BTH175 were converted from BH150 & BH151 in 1992 to provide more BTH cars in order to enable more H sets to be created (a BTH car is required at the West end of each H set so the locomotive or powervan can couple on to the set and power the set).

BTH carriages rely on HEP (Head End Power) from a locomotive or power van for power.
