Since 2000, V/Line has contracted EDI Rail (formerly Clyde Engineering) to provide all of its fleet maintenance services. This includes preventative maintenance and refurbishments, washing, and fixing any faults found with the rolling stock fleet.

During 2004-05, more than 16,300 routine preventative examinations took place, and 35 major overhauls were carried out.

Cleaners contracted by V/Line go through the carriages when they are stabled each night vacuuming, cleaning the toilets emptying bins and cleaning up general mess (rubbish left in the saloon areas such as newspapers, etc.).

Waste is pumped out of the carriages’ retention toilets at Spencer Street by the EDI Rail ‘Toilet Truck’, which is a small truck has a large chrome tank with a hose attached in place of a tray section. The hose from the tank is connected to the carriages’ waste output socket, and waste is pumped out by the tank. This generally occurs at least weekly with each carriage/carriage set.

Each week, preventative maintenance examinations by EDI rail staff take place in each carriage which is in service to check for any damages and/or faults that need to be fixed.

Every five weeks, a more thorough inspection is performed in which just about every component of the carriage is checked to make sure it is in working order.

External cleaning of carriages is completed at the car washes at both Spencer Street and Geelong. This generally happens when the carriages are not required for service for the remainder of the day, and are in need of a wash.

The carriages are separated from the locomotive taking them through the wash by a VZKF flat wagon.

Extensive inspections occur every twelve months, which includes the servicing of the carriages undercarriage equipment (bogies, brakes, alternators) and air conditioning.

Typically every two and a half years each carriage set or individual carriage has its bogies and brakes rebuilt, and every five years they are repainted, with seat fabrics, carpets and other inside furnishings replaced where required.

General maintenance (such as weekly/five weekly checks), and yearly servicing is usually completed at the EDI Rail Spencer Street Carriage Maintenance Depot.

Larger maintenance tasks are performed at the EDI Rail Newport Workshops.
