A dual power
system is fitted to the original three 'N' cars (ACN-BRN-BN) in
three VN sets; VN12, VN15 & VN17, allowing these carriages to power
themselves in the case of HEP failure. However, the two other
carriages in these sets, the BZN & the BTN, still have to rely on
HEP from a N Class locomotive for power.
The third VN set, VN18, is still required to be powered from Head End Power
(HEP) from a N Class locomotive or a powervan, as it does not have a
dual power system.
They have a
capacity of 366 seats, with 52 First Class seats, and 314 seats Economy. The least common type of 'N' set, the five car N Sets
can be seen in operation primarily behind N Class locos, running
the 1517 & 1607 down South Geelong services, and the 0646
& 0653 up South Geelong services Monday to Friday.
Each VN Set has a snack bar-
in the BRN
car. They have five toilets (one in each carriage),
and a conductors van which also has sufficient luggage space (at
the rear of the ACN
Car). Wheelchairs can be placed just in front of the buffet
module in the BRN
car, and in the BZN
carriage, where there are two special doors (one each side) and a
wheelchair accessible toilet.
Additional 'N', 'Z' & 'S'
type carriages can be added to them to increase seating capacity-
and this can be frequently done during busy patronage periods.
There are four VN sets-
VN12, VN15, VN17 & VN18. VN15 is in the current V/Line
red/white/blue livery with V/Line mk II logos and has been a VN
set since August 2006. It was previously FN15. The 'original' VN
sets (VN12, 17, 18) are all in the current red/white/blue livery
with a mixture of mk I and mk II logos throughout their
consists.
