Last of Eastern Line RFR Works to Commence 29/04

The last of the Eastern Line Regional Fast Rail works being completed by Regional Rail Link will commence on Saturday 29th April 2006, and run for approximately four months.

In this time, a mix of stopping, semi-express, and express coaches will replace all rail services between Bairnsdale and Pakenham, with V/Line rail services continuing on to Melbourne connecting with the coaches at Pakenham.

Works to be completed during this shutdown, the second major shutdown of the Eastern line as part of the RFR project, will include:-

  • Installation of several new crossovers in Warragul, Moe, Morwell and Traralgon.

  • Decommissioning of the present safeworking and signalling systems in place between Pakenham and Traralgon, including the Large Electric Staff System in place between Morwell and Traralgon.

  • Full installation and commissioning of a new, modern signalling system throughout the corridor, to be controlled from Traralgon and Centrol.

  • Safety improvements at 12 level and 11 pedestrian crossings, including installation of boom barriers at 8 level crossings

  • Track and surface upgrades at the Lloyd Street (129.445km) level crossing in Moe.

As part of the level crossing works, two level crossings will be closed throughout the works to ensure the safety of motorists.
These crossings are:-

  • Waterloo Road (121.288km), near Trafalgar, and
  • Nine Mile Road (116.152km), near Yarragon

Freight services will continue to run during the night, and motorists are reminded to keep an eye out for machinery operating on the tracks at crossings.

Once all of the works along the line have been completed, comprehensive testing of the new signalling system and training of drivers on the line will occur, and once testing of the signalling system is completed and drivers are familiar with new aspects of the line, rail services are set to return in around four months time (around August 2006).

A temporary purple timetable for this shutdown was released online by V/Line on Thursday 20th April.
