N Type Carriages were built between 1981 and 1984 as part of the VicRail program to upgrade country passenger rail services to a better standard.

Featuring three base carriages - an ACN, BRN & BN, N sets were modern at the time and contained a conductors van, First Class accommodation with reclining and rotating seats with meal trays, a buffet module and two Economy class carriages.

All original N cars and sets are still in service with V/Line, and are used on each line, running both inter-urban and inter-city services.

From 1995 to 2003, several ex BCZ, BZ and BZS carriages had their seating replaced with 'N' car style seating, and other modifications made. With this came the introduction of two 'new' types of N cars (originally Z cars) - BZN & BTN carriages. BZN carriages, with their wider east end doors can be seen as the fourth car in FN sets, and BTN carriages are commonly used to provide extra capacity on services which require it.

For the past eight years, there have been three types of N sets - three car, four car and five car, known as N, FN & VN sets respectively.
