N Sets consist of three cars- an ACN, BRN and BN.

Originally consisting of an ACN and two BN's, this changed when BRN's were first made and released.

They have a capacity of 206 seats, with 52 First Class seats, and 154 in Economy. The most common type of 'N' set, the three car N Sets can be seen in operation primarily behind N Class locos. However, back in there early days, they have been seen behind A, B, L, S, & X Classes - and even recently, P Classes!

Power to the sets is supplied by the form of a Dual Power Supply . Generally Head End Power (HEP) from a N Class locomotive will power the cars, however, if the Program Logic Controller (a component of the Dual Power Supply system) doesn't detect HEP from a locomotive, or if there's a technical problem with the HEP being supplied, the individual diesel alternators under the carriages automatically start up and provide power to the cars.

Each N Set has a snack bar- in the BRN car, three toilets (one per carriage), and a conductors van which also has sufficient luggage space (at the rear of the ACN Car). Wheelchairs can be placed just in front of the buffet module in the BRN car.

N sets can be seen on all V/Line Pass. interurban and intercity line services, including Geelong, Warrnambool, Ballarat, Bacchus Marsh, Bendigo, Traralgon, Sale, Swan Hill, Bairnsdale, Albury & Shepparton trains.

Additional 'N', 'Z' & 'S' type carriages can be added to them to increase seating capacity.

Currently, there are six three car N Sets, with all of them being in the current V/Line Red/White/Blue livery- with the present V/Line logo.
