Z Type Carriages were built in the 1950's as airconditioned steel carriages for use on VR's long distance named services (The Gippslander, The Vinelander, etc.)

Originally AZ & BZ cars, soon after the release of N cars in the early 1980's, most Z cars were shopped into Ballarat and Bendigo workshops where they were modified to contain guards vans, new seating cloth and curtains and First Class seating, along with a number of other minor modifications to get the V/Line steel carriage fleet to a standard similar to that of their new N carriage fleet.

These refurbished carriages were given a new classification of 'ACZ' and were renumbered into the mid 200's number range. From then on until the early to mid 1990's, ACZ carriages were utilised as being the First Class carriage and the carriage in which the guards van was contained in sets made up of mixed Z (BZ) & S (BS, BRS) type carriages, which were simply known as 'Z' sets.

From 1995 til 2003, several changes occurred with ACZ carriages. Some ACZ's were recoded as 'BCZ' carriages for Economy use, whilst others were once again refurbished and reclassified as BZN & BTN type carriages.

At present, V/Line has four ACZ carriages in service, and one BZ carriage in service. There are two Z sets in service - VZ1 & VZ2, which contain a mixture of ACZ, BZN, BTN & BS carriages, with the ACZ carriage at the furthermost east end of the set being the First Class carriage and the carriage containing the conductors van.
